Officials Lecture Students On ‘3Rs’ of Correctional Service

In order to expose students to field experience in crime management, the Department of Crime Management, Lens Polytechnic Offa has embarked on an excursion to the Nigerian Correctional Service in Omu-Aran Kwara State.

The students led by the Head of Department and other staff members were received by the officials of Correctional Service on Tuesday 26 November 2024.

The officials who led the excursion team on a guided tour exposed students to practical knowledge about the facility’s operations. During the session, the students were introduced to the “3 R’s” of the correctional service: Rehabilitation, Reformation, and Reintegration.

While speaking, ACC Olaniran Adeniyi shed light on the root causes of crime, such as lack of contentment, cybercrime, drug abuse, corruption and get rich quick syndrome, he also emphasized on the importance of personal responsibility and the rule of law. He reminded the students on the need to distance themselves from unlawful behaviour, adding that one who cannot face the law should not commit any crime.

In his reaction, the Head of Department of Crime Management, Mr. Christian Egbekoba said the comprehensive lecture sessions, particularly on the “3 R’s”—Rehabilitation, Reformation, and Reintegration provided invaluable insights into the core principles of the correctional system. He added that the principles align closely with the department’s mission to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address crime effectively.

According to him, “As the Head of the Crime Management Department, I would like to express my profound appreciation for the opportunity to visit the Nigerian Correctional Service in Omu-Aran, Kwara State. The excursion was an eye-opening experience that bridged the gap between theoretical learning and practical application.

“The guided tour further enriched our understanding by offering firsthand exposure to correctional practices, which will significantly enhance our academic discussions and professional preparedness. This visit not only deepened our appreciation for the correctional system’s role in societal development but also inspired our students to become ambassadors of positive change in their communities.”

“We look forward to leveraging this experience to strengthen our curriculum and foster collaborations with institutions like the Nigerian Correctional Service to prepare our students for impactful careers in crime management,” he added.
