New Trending Cyber Attack Alert: Protect Yourself from Mobile Hotspot Scams

Cyber security is the most important thing in today’s internet world. Most businesses understand the need to develop a cyber security strategy. While most cyber attackers focus on stealing sensitive data, some organizations gives priority on protecting their digital assets, having known the consequences of an attack.

This cyber break-in through mobile hotspot is a good example of an attack that involves digital assets.

In most recent times, cyber criminals have devised new ways to swindle unsuspecting Nigerians of their hard-earned money. One of the latest tactics is the use of mobile hotspots to gain unauthorized access to victims’ personal and financial information.

The scammer typically approaches a victim, usually in a public place, and requests to use their mobile hotspot or device to access the internet. Once the victim grants access, the scammer uses the opportunity to install malicious software or apps on the device in a seconds, which can then be used to steal sensitive information of the victims, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and bank account details.

Cyber criminality is a serious offense under Nigerian law, which undoubtedly have severe consequences, including imprisonment and a lifelong stigma on the culprit. It is essential for the general public, especially the youths, to be aware of these new tactics and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, while creating awareness to protect others.

Hence, I sincerely urge the youths not to get involved in any criminal activities that may get them into future troubles. Instead, they are encouraged to focus on developing their skills and talents in positive and productive ways. They should be aware that electronic transactions are permanently recorded on the cloud, no matter how long, they can still be traceable when no one can thought of it.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, please follow these precautions strictly:

1. Be cautious and never share your mobile hotspot or devices with untrusted persons. Remember, closeness is not the same as trustworthiness.

2. Never grant access of your device or hotspot to someone you don’t know very well.

3. Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication to protect your device and online accounts.

4. Keep your device and apps up to date with the latest security patches.

5. Monitor your account activity regularly and report any suspicious transactions to your bank or financial institution.

Cybercrime is a growing threat that requires our collective attention and action. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from these scams.
