Amotekun recaptures robbery suspect after escape from police custody

The leadership of Amotekun Corps in Osun State, on Friday disclosed that its operatives had apprehended a suspect that escaped from police custody.

Parading suspects arrested for various crimes in the state on Friday, the state Commander, Osun Amotekun Corps, Isaac Omoyele, said the suspect, a 26-year-old, John Uba, had fled police custody in Otaefun Division, Osogbo and went on to be involved in armed robbery operations.

Omoyele said, “On the 17th of April, 2025, at about 00:03 hours, we received intelligence from the Fiwasaye area in Osogbo about an ongoing armed robbery operation.

“Our officers responded immediately and successfully arrested one of the culprits, John Uba, a 26-year-old male, for the theft of mobile phones and other valuables.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspect had previously escaped from the Ota-Efun Division of the Nigeria Police Force. He also confessed to being a repeat offender.

“The suspect has since been handed over to the Ota-Efun Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.”

Also paraded were Idowu Tajudeen (27), Bamanga Joffrey (24), and Femi Adeniyi (22), who were arrested in connection with a case of burglary and theft at GRA, Osogbo.

The Amotekun boss said the suspects were found to have unlawfully entered the premises and stolen a pumping machine and other items valued at approximately N8.5m.

He added that during the investigation, the suspects confessed to the crime.

He also mentioned a case of theft of cable valued at N5.6m at Hammed Omidiran University, Kolabalogun Area, Osogbo, saying upon receipt of distress call from the scene of the crime, men of the corps responded swiftly.

“Our personnel apprehended a suspect identified as Aderemi Sheriff, 28 years, while his accomplice escaped. Unfortunately, part of the cable had already been set on fire before intervention.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and admitted to having committed similar offences in the past. Background checks confirmed that he was an ex-convict with a history of cable theft,” Omoyele further said.

With the personnel strength now exceeding 1,450 officers, Omoyele said Osun Amotekun Corps remained more determined and better equipped to protect lives and property.
