The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has unveiled the National Secondary School Essay Competition in honour of Prince Nduka Obaigbena, a renowned leader in the media industry.
In a statement, Frank Tietie, Executive Director of CASER, described the annual competition as a platform to nurture the next generation of ethical and responsible communicators.
He said the initiative would encourage strong writing, critical thinking, and a deep commitment to truth in journalism, values championed by Prince Obaigbena throughout his illustrious career.
“This initiative celebrates a legacy of excellence in journalism and broadcasting across Africa,” said Tietie.
According to Tietie, the competition, open to secondary school students across the country, aims to promote ethical communication at a time when concerns about fake news, online abuse, and declining media credibility continue to rise.
He said entries will be assessed by Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, while the evaluation criteria have been developed by Professor Sunny Awhefada to ensure a rigorous and fair selection process.
For its inaugural edition, the competition is exclusive to students of Government College Ughelli, the alma mater of Prince Obaigbena.
CASER stressed that this initiative is not just a writing contest but a call to uphold truth, clarity, and journalistic integrity in an era of widespread media consumption.

Winners will receive cash prizes ranging from N200,000 to N500,000, with the official announcement taking place in July during the birthday celebration of Prince Obaigbena.
