“Democracy is not just about holding elections on periodic intervals. But about entrenching strong institutional values, about inclusion, participation, accountability, equity, justice, and respect for the principles of fundamental human rights”, said Ogbeni Segun Ogunniyi as Nigerian celebrated the annual Democracy day held today 12th day of June 2025.
In a statement during the occasion, Ogunniyi reminded Nigerians that the strength of democracy is in active citizen participation and the equal treatment of all, no matter the tribe, religion, or social class. He called the need for national unity and renewed hope in building a country where every individual has the opportunity to prosper and flourish.
He also urged citizens to remember and honor the sacrifices of Nigeria’s democratic heroes, past and present. He encouraged all Nigerians to see themselves as active contributors to the building and development of the country, united by a common vision of peace, justice, and prosperity for all. “ Let us preserve the memories and legacies of our past and present heroes”, He said.
Concluding his message, Ogunniyi expressed hope for a better Nigeria one where no individual is oppressed and where there is peace and unity. “Let us all, as fellow compatriots and responsible citizens, stand to be counted as builders of a nation where no man is oppressed… so with peace and plenty, Nigeria may be blessed,” he said. “Happy Democracy Day
