A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed the girls’ hostel at Dano Memorial Secondary School, Gidan Mission, Gani in Sumaila Local Government Area, Kano State.
The incident occurred on Monday while students had already vacated the school premises for the end-of-term holiday.
This is contained in a statement by the LGA Information Officer, Sumaila Gunduwawa, a copy of which was made available to The Punch on Tuesday.
“The inferno razed the hostel’s building, leaving nearly all the students’ personal belongings in ruins. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the chairman of the local government, Farouk Abdu, had paid a visit to the school where he assessed the extent of the damage caused by the inferno.
Abdu, who described the incident as very unfortunate, expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the school’s management and the affected students.
The council chairman announced a donation of fifty bags of cement from the local government to aid in the reconstruction of the damaged hostel.
He assured the school community of the council’s continued support during this difficult time.
The chairman was conducted around the scene by the School Proprietor, Rev. Alhassan Musa, who confirmed the fire took place shortly after students departed for vacation.
He expressed relief that there were no casualties and acknowledged the timely intervention of the local government.
Musa extended his gratitude to the Sumaila Local Government for its concern and generous donation, emphasising the importance of community support in rebuilding efforts.
During the visit, the chairman was accompanied by his Vice, Adda’u Liman, Administrative Secretary, Suraj Kanawa and Director of Personnel Management, Bappa Gaya.
Meanwhile, Abdu has called on herders and farmers in Bango village, Kanawa Ward, to embrace tolerance and respect each other’s rights in the interest of peace and development.
He made the call during a meeting held in his office with representatives of both groups on Monday.
