At a memorial service on Sunday, September 21, 2025, former US President Donald Trump described slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk as a “martyr for American freedom.”
Kirk, aged 31, was shot dead on September 10 at a university campus in Utah. His death drew thousands of mourners to State Farm Stadium in Arizona, where nearly 65,000 people attended his memorial.
The event carried a strong religious tone, with Christian rock music and speakers comparing Kirk’s life to that of a biblical martyr. Many attendees wore red, white, and blue, chanting “USA! USA!” as Trump and others addressed the crowd.
Supporters described Kirk as a bold Christian who defended “biblical principles,” especially against LGBTQ causes. Some attendees expressed anger at critics who mocked his death, while others, like members of his group Turning Point USA, pledged to continue his work.
Trump aide Stephen Miller told the gathering, “You have no idea the dragon you have awakened.” Attendees echoed the sentiment that Kirk’s killing would inspire more activism, with many declaring, “We’re all Charlie Kirk now.”
Kirk’s widow, Erika, urged forgiveness for the alleged killer, a stance shared by some supporters who said the tragedy would only strengthen their movement.
