Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as the people of Kano State and the northern region, will repay President Bola Tinubu for his support and goodwill in the 2027 general elections.
Barau made this known on Monday during his annual undergraduate scholarship programme held at the newly renamed Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
The event was attended by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, the Kano APC Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, and the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Kadage, among others — all of whom praised President Tinubu’s developmental efforts.
Barau expressed deep gratitude to Tinubu for approving the upgrade of the former Federal College of Education (Technical) Kano to a full-fledged university, saying the decision ended nearly ten years of lobbying for the upgrade.
“President Tinubu loves Kano, he loves the North, and he loves Nigeria. He granted our request to upgrade this institution, and we remain grateful. We must reciprocate his gestures when the time comes in 2027,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President described Tinubu as a leader who prioritises education and human capital development, noting that “if you get education right, you have succeeded.”
Barau also commended the President for renaming the institution after the late Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, a respected statesman and diplomat from Kano, saying the gesture reflected Tinubu’s respect for the North and its heroes.
He pledged continued support for the university, referring to Tinubu as the “grandfather” of the institution and himself as its “father.”
Barau further announced scholarships for 1,000 students from his Kano North Senatorial District, promising to expand the initiative across the state.
“Education is the bedrock of any society. If I, as a grandfather and a PhD student, can still be studying, then no young person has an excuse to stop learning,” he added.
The APC Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, and other dignitaries at the event also praised Tinubu’s interventions in Kano and the northern region.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi Kadage lauded Senator Barau for his “visionary leadership and unwavering support,” noting that the university’s creation was made possible through a bill he sponsored at the National Assembly.
