The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to begin a two-week nationwide warning strike on Monday, October 13, 2025, over the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands.
This was contained in a memo titled “Strike Bulletin One” sent to all ASUU branches and signed by its National President, Professor Chris Piwuna.
According to the memo, the decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the government to sign and implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement. Piwuna lamented that, despite repeated engagements, the government had shown no meaningful commitment to addressing the union’s concerns.
He said the National Executive Council (NEC), after evaluating reports from various branches during its meeting on September 28, 2025, resolved to embark on a warning strike if the government failed to act.
Piwuna thanked members for their patience throughout the prolonged negotiations, which have dragged on for over eight years. He urged lecturers to remain united and mobilise for the planned action, stressing that the strike aims to compel the government to honour agreements, resolve salary arrears, and improve the welfare and working conditions of university staff.
He added, “We are strong when we organise, but weakened when we agonise. The goal of our action is to make government take the university system seriously.”
ASUU also directed its members to take instructions only from branch chairpersons and to stay updated through union channels.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over the non-implementation of key agreements reached with the union.
In a communiqué issued after its NEC meeting at Federal University, Lafia, NAAT President Ibeji Nwokoma listed unresolved issues such as the non-completion of the 2009 FGN/NAAT Agreement renegotiation, non-payment of earned allowances, and delays in salary payments.
The union warned that failure to address these issues within the 14 days would force it to declare an industrial action.
