Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa Holds Digitizing Yoruba Heritage Training Programme

In a bid to promote Yoruba heritage, culture and enhance its global relevance, the Offa Wikipedia fans club has held a sensitization programme for members of Offa community on the benefits importance of digitizing Yoruba heritage.

The programme titled ‘Digitizing Yoruba Heritage: One Edit at a Time’ was held on Saturday, 29 November 2025, at Hengee Resort and featured practical training session on how to operate and edit content on Wikipedia by giving appropriate signs and symbols to Yoruba contents uploaded on Wikipedia.

While engaging the participants, the founder of the Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa, Mr. Salako Lukman Olamikan, provided insight on the mutual benefits and income for the Yoruba content creators and editors on Wikipedia. He noted that the Yoruba Wikipedia project will benefit the community, local tourism and bridge the gap between tradition and technology.

Talking about the future prospects of the Yoruba Wikipedia project, he said the project can be expanded into schools, libraries, and community centers.

“Integration into curriculum, development of mobile apps, and creation of audio-visual content that can boost engagement. With consistent growth, our local languages Wikipedia will become a national language resource, inspiring other local languages to follow. By 2030, it could evolve into a cultural database, a learning hub, and a beacon for global digital heritage,” he said.

Speaking further, Salako noted that the Yoruba Wikipedia allows Yoruba-speaking community members to document their history, share cultural practices, and build local expertise with digital tools. He added that Yoruba Wikipedia users are not just writing; they are preparing identity and building a knowledge legacy that benefits both present and future generations.

He therefore appreciated the participants, other facilitators and the entire Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa community for adding value to the event.

Also speaking, the Global President of Yoruba Wikimedians and CEO, Sekere Radio, Mikaeel Adeshina advised teachers to be using Wikipedia for primary and secondary school students and always keep their notes on Wikipedia for record purposes.

According to him, “We can keep our daily dairies, historical stories, or biography on Wikipedia, because we will surely leave one day and might not be able to tell children some things so they can find it there at any time. Because Wikipedia never forgets.”

The climax of the event featured the presentation of awards to Ègbé Akọmolèdè Yoruba ẹkùn Ọfà and Oyun and the Global President of Yoruba Wikimedians User Group
