Skills Not Degrees: FEDPOFFA Adopts New NBTE Mantra

Establishes Skills Development Centre

In the face of rapid technological advancements and evolving job requirements, the focus on skills has gained substantial momentum. This shift has not only been recognized globally but has also been actively integrated into educational frameworks by stakeholders in Nigeria’s educational sector such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Board for Technical Education ( NBTE).

As the fastest-growing Polytechnic, the Federal Polytechnic Offa led by Engr. Dr. Kadiri Kamoru Oluwatoyin FNSE has taken a progressive leap in this direction by adopting the “Skills Not Degrees” mantra, aligning with the National Board for Technical Education’s (NBTE) ethos with the establishment of the Skills Development Center.

The traditional emphasis on acquiring degrees has led to a substantial oversight in the development and recognition of practical, industry-specific skills. In today’s dynamic job market, employers are increasingly seeking individuals with relevant skills and hands-on experience that directly align with the demands of the workplace. This trend has prompted the Polytechnic to reassess its approach to education and prioritize the cultivation of practical competencies.

By aligning with the NBTE’s “Skills Not Degrees” approach, the Federal Polytechnic Offa aims to not only equip its students with theoretical knowledge but also with the practical expertise required to excel in their chosen fields. This shift acknowledges the need for a more balanced and inclusive educational approach that goes beyond conventional classroom learning. It also underscores the value of applied skills and real-world experience in preparing students for successful careers.

The adoption of this mantra by the Polytechnic showcases a forward-looking mindset that is geared toward producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also industry-ready. The polytechnic’s commitment to this approach is evident in its curriculum, which emphasizes hands-on training, internships, and industry partnerships. Through these initiatives, students are provided with opportunities to develop and showcase their skills in real-world scenarios, thereby enhancing their employability and adaptability in a competitive job market.

Furthermore, the “Skills Not Degrees” mantra emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning and skill development. It recognizes that the acquisition of skills is an ongoing process that extends beyond the confines of formal education. The Federal Polytechnic Offa’s alignment with this principle signifies its dedication to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth among its students, enabling them to remain agile and relevant in an ever-evolving professional landscape.

The Polytechnic’s embrace of the “Skills Not Degrees” mantra, as advocated by the National Board for Technical Education, represents a pivotal step towards creating a more industry-responsive and skill-oriented educational framework. By prioritizing practical competencies and hands-on experience, the institution is preparing its students to thrive in the contemporary job market and contribute meaningfully to the workforce. As the global focus on skills continues to gain prominence, The Federal Polytechnic Offa’s proactive approach is a testament to the evolving nature of education and the imperative of equipping individuals with the practical skills needed for success in a rapidly changing world.

With the establishment of a Skills Development Center, the Polytechnic will henceforth award certificates on skills acquisition to deserving students in an addendum to the National Diploma or Higher National Diploma certificates in their various fields.
