Offa Digital Heritage Bill Scales First Reading
Speaker Sharafa Says the Law Will Protect and Preserve Offa’s Story for Generations
The Speaker of Offa Local Government Legislative Council, Rt Hon Mustapha Olawale Sharafa, has announced that the bill for the Offa Digital Heritage Documentation Initiative has passed its first reading and has been referred to the appropriate committee for further legislative action. He described the milestone as a bold step toward giving legal backing to efforts that preserve Offa’s history, culture, and identity through digital documentation.
In a release signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker Offa Local Government Legislative Council, Olawale Jubril FMJ, Ibolo, Rt Hon Sharafa said the proposed law will institutionalize the documentation of historical sites, cultural practices, and indigenous knowledge across Offa. This will protect the work of stakeholders like the Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa and ensure future generations have access to accurate records of who we are. The Speaker stressed that Offa must take charge of its own narrative rather than leave it to others.
He commended the bill sponsors and all stakeholders supporting the initiative, noting that the 8th Legislative Council remains committed to policies that advance education, technology, and cultural preservation. The Speaker assured that the committee will conduct thorough scrutiny to ensure the final law reflects the aspirations of the people and stands the test of time.
Rt Hon Sharafa called on youths, traditional institutions, and cultural custodians to participate actively when the committee opens for public input. He reiterated that heritage belongs to everyone and Offa must protect its truth by documenting it now. The Legislative Council will continue to support initiatives that secure Offa’s legacy for generations to come.
